CLASS of 1871 in front of the Herndon Monument
No sooner had the Herndon Monument been built that it became important to midshipmen, as seen
in the photograph below. For years each class would pose in front of the monument for their class photo.
The monument in 1871 was surrounded by shrubs and trees as can be seen in the photograph. Plebes
could not really see the monument as they were forbidden in the walkway, Love Lane, that led to the monument.
