ORIGINAL IMAGE
The proportions of a 35 mm camera file are not really a 3 1/2 x 5 or 5 x7 proportion, which are the typical print sizes made These two sizes are proportionally the same). They are actually 5 x 7.529 if you set one side as 5 ----- and 7 x 4.648 if you set one side as 7. Therefore, when we print a 5x7 or an 8x10 the sides of the image need to be cut. See below.

| To your imediate right find a print cropped to a 5 x 7 proportion from original image proportion. Notice that we have lost some of the image from the top and the bottom -- not on the sides. |
Now look at a print cropped to an 8 x 10 proportion from original image proportion. NOTICE---for an 8 x10 porportion we have lost more of the image on the top and bottom --actually about 13 % more. This is because the proportion long side to short side on a 5x7 file is about 67 % -- and the pr oportion on an 8x10 prie is 80%. The difference is about 13%. So, if you ask us to make an 8x10 print from an image, we will have to cut off about 13% from the sides. |
CUSTOM COLLAGE CROPPING |
| Cropping sample for collage. For a collage, we do not use the 5x7 or 8x10 cropping proportion. We crop to enhance the image and at the same time crop to fit in the 13 x 19 space we have for the collage. |
Extreme cropping for collage. To the right is extreme cropping we use for a collage. We will not cut out any plebes. |
